“We’re so ashamed of our brokenness, our frailty. We’re deathly afraid of our loneliness, of being The Other. But if the Gospels taught us anything, the only ones Jesus ever shamed were the shamers themselves.

The unacceptable were the very ones who Christ found fit to accept. The Other was with whom he lived, ate, and found communion. Indeed, the broken were the very ones lucky enough to be considered friends of Jesus of Nazareth.

Perhaps our depravity should not scare us nearly as much as we’ve allowed. Perhaps our loneliness and brokenness should not be a source of shame, self-loathing, or disorientation. Perhaps it places us squarely amongst some very welcoming company.”
